********************First Textual Analysis Response



Hello Class,

In The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, by Jennifer 8. Lee, she talks about how one piece of information—lottery wins across our country linked to fortune cookie fortunes—inspired her to investigate her personal Chinese-American heritage.  Her in-depth look at her personal Chinese American heritage, as well as investigation on many aspects of this culture drive her book. 


FIRST TEXT ANALYSIS RESPONSE

Pick one line (sentence) from Chapter 5, or from your assigned blurb, that really stands out to you and makes you think about ONE of the following topics: Culture, Identity, or Family.


In a blog response, do the following:

1) Enter in the title of the post, : Culture, Identity, or Family– depending on which topic you have chosen.

2) Within the actual post, respond to the topic by re-stating your quoted line, and giving a detailed explanation of how you understand this line represents the general topic.
In this response, you must also spend only one brief paragraph summarizing the story to provide context for the quoted line (4 sentences), and then interpret the line in terms of what it says about culture, identity, or family)? (This should be another couple of paragraphs, at least 7-10 sentences. This is the bulk of your blog post. Make connections to yourself, and share your opinions.     ' there are renditions with short squat pieces, long thin pieces, dark meat, white meat, and mysterious reconstituted mystery meat. There are versions akin to McDonald's Chicken Nuggets, more bread coating than meat, and others where you cannot tell where chicken ends and dough begins.' From what they've described they pretty have there own Chinese version of Mcdonald nuggets. China always there way of remaking something america has. They have to the T with the nuggets. including the sauce, it says they have 'Brown and runny' known as BBQ Sauce, 'Red and syrupy' Known as SWEET AND SOUR, and 'yellow and sweet like honey' known as Honey mustard. I feel through there culture they just have the samethings but have a different name for it. I feel it most likely want taste the same. American food and chinese food will always have two different taste. It seems like a battle between the two cultures. the book says the chicken has the name 'General Tso chicken' which also reminds me of america with Kernal Kentucy Fried Chicken. The challenge between the two seeing who can make the best fried chicken or best nuggets

  2. First Textual Analysis Response: Culture

    “I pictured how Americans would react to General Tso’s puppy on their take-out menus.”(Ch.5 pg.73) This sentence stands out to me, and makes me think about all the different cultures around the world and how Americans change it to what they like. The book is about a second generation Chinese-American woman named Jennifer 8. Lee travels around the world finding the roots of Chinese food. Lee tracks down some dishes Americans know so well, and finds the origin of the dishes. It all started on March 30, 2005 when 110 people won 100 million dollars from the Powerball, winning numbers coming from a fortune cookie.
    I chose this sentence from chapter 5 because it deals with how the Chinese culture is different than Americans culture in many ways. Jennifer 8. Lee is talking to a sixty-six year old farmer and they talk about how dog tastes and how it’s good for you. In China many people use dog as a sources of meat. In America it is illegal to slaughter and consumption of dogs completely. In China people don’t have sentimental attachments to them as pets. I have traveled to many different countries and have tried very exotic dishes.
    Last year my grandfather took me to Puerto Rico to visit my family there. I stayed there for 2 weeks and I wanted to explore the culture here. My grandfather’s family lives in the inland. Driving from the airport to country was cool to see. Dogs roaming the streets, people driving reckless, and everyone on the streets. Dinnertime with the family was the best; I got to try different plates that I would never of tried back home. The most exotic dish I tried while I was there was cow tongue. My grandpa didn’t tell me what it was until after I ate it.
    Many countries all around the world have unique cultures in food, lifestyle, and values. Some not everyone in America understands and is not practiced back in the states. People have to stake a step out of their comfort zone and try new things. How do they know they wouldn’t like it if they haven’t tried it?

  3. "How did General Tso's Chicken come to be? it seemed America must have had a hand in it. Chinese food in China is a diverse lot, but once it came to the United States it developed a few central characteristics."

    The story behind this quote is how Americanized Chinese. It was said that the Chinese food was unhealthy but it wasn’t the real Chinese food from China, It was the Americanized Chinese food from America. It is said that Chinese restaurants in America tend to shy away from anything that is a familiar animal. It seems that Americans are very picky eaters when it comes to foods that are healthy but you throw Americans some fries and a cheeseburger and they don’t think twice.


    I believe this has to do very much with culture. The American culture only knows foods that are not recognizable as a animal unlike China. Real Chinese food had to be Americanized in America because it was noticed as a animal. For example seafood in the China culture looks more sea creature like, so in America we Americanized it to the point where it fits our culture and doesn't look like to much of a sea creature. American Chinese food may be called “Chinese food” but It’s just a replica on how we want to see Chinese food in America. This also goes for any other kind of foreign foods to our culture. We make it similar but different at the same time to fit what we know as Americans.

    “Chinese cuisine took on an American influence in order to make a business out of it. If you give them real authentic Chinese cuisine, Americans can’t accept that.” This line speaks to my about culture because it is simply stating how different the two nations are. I guess I liked this quote the most because of it’s affirming nature. Throughout the book it consistently states how different the two cultures (American and Chinese) are. I feel that this line reinforces it. I also feel that this quote shows culture just by it’s blatant opinion of the American culture and how picky we can be. It shows how America has to change not only Chinese food, but all cultures food in order for us to like it. Therefore “Americanizing” everything.
